I missed this when it was first released, but here’s Sylvain Munaut demonstrating a cheap Motorola Calypso phone (C115, C118, C123 etc) acting like a GSM base station.
Doesn’t have enough bandwidth for voice calls, but can send control signals & SMS. Amazing piece of hacking.
